Amethyst - Birthstone for February
If the purple depths of an Amethyst imbue you with a feeling of wellness, it is testament to the stone’s immense power. The ancient Greeks believed that Amethyst gave the wearer power and protected them against intoxication and overindulgence. To this day, Amethyst is symbolic of the struggles against addictive behaviors.
Amethyst is the birthstone for February. It is an affordable stone available in colors ranging from lavender to reddish or deep purple, and is very widely used in jewelry. The affordability and versatility of this gemstone makes it an ideal birthday gift.
Amethyst is also the birthstone for Aquarius and the wedding anniversary gemstone for the 4th and 6th years of marriage.
History of Amethyst
According to an ancient Greek myth, Bacchus, the god of wine, was insulted once by a mortal. Flying into a rage, Bacchus swore to unleash his fierce tigers on the next mortal who crossed his path. A beautiful maiden named Amethyst was the next mortal who happened to chance by Bacchus, and the goddess Diana turned her into a quartz statue to save her from the vicious claws of the tigers. The remorseful tears of Bacchus drenched the statue turning it a deep purple.
Purple has long been the color of royalty. For this reason, Amethyst has always been hugely popular throughout history. The British Crown jewels has Amethysts and the Egyptian royalty also favors this stone.
The ancient monarchs often dyed their clothes in purple and since purple dye was scarce and expensive at that time, it was reserved only for royalty. Amethyst also has significance in religious motifs, it is used to adorn churches, crosses, rings and rosaries. Amethyst is sometimes called the Bishop’s Stone because most catholic bishops wear an Amethyst in a traditional ring to symbolize humility, piety and spiritual wisdom.
Powers of Amethyst
Amethyst was once considered more valuable than diamonds because of the powers it possesses. If you gift an amethyst to a person, it symbolizes protection and power to overcome any difficulties that may arise in the person’s life.
It is also said to strengthen the bond between lovers, so it is ideal for anniversaries and engagements.
The color purple is believed to bring sweet dreams, deep sleep and protects against poison. It is widely used in meditation and healing.
Amethyst is said to relax and calm the mind, relieve headaches and open the mind to spirituality. It also brings good luck in war and promotes trust and friendship.
Amethyst is such a beautiful gem that regardless of the mystic properties of the gem, it is said the wearer will feel like royalty.
Amethyst Jewelry
Amethyst is very popular in diamond jewelry. They are used in necklaces, rings, bracelets, pendants earrings and bracelets. The stone is also used in large ornaments and décor such as center pieces, clocks, bookends and vases.
